Makeup Trendzzzzz...

Let’s spice things up a little this week and try something new.

Today I’m featuring a new writer, my friend, Gianna Robles, who got randomly inspired on a subject, started typing, and just couldn’t stop.  Which is exactly what I do every other week.  Enjoy!

Orange is the color of the season!

Or how about… this season makeup manufacturers decided that they will produce excessive amounts of products ranging in this color?  As a makeup lover (more like connoisseur), I can genuinely say that this is lame.

Orange is not necessarily flattering on everyone!  Imagine your dark eyelashes with lots of black mascara and an orange liner on top.  HELLO HALLOWEEN!  And yes, I know, it’s not only orange, its coral and all the shades in between.  This way the "gurus" can say that you need to find your shade.

I'm not particularly a lover or hater of this color.  What I hate is that the majority of people do not have a lot of money to buy a lot of makeup, let alone expensive makeup.  The average person will probably buy makeup once a year, so these "trend" impositions are ridiculous and unfortunate.  It hurts me to imagine young girls wearing orange throughout the whole year, just because they were unlucky enough to go in the store during that specific time of the year.

I am only presenting the issue of color, which by itself is remediable if the person is lucky enough to choose the product in the right shade for them.  But, how about this?

I visited the MAC store the other day with the idea of trying on and, hopefully, purchasing a foundation. When I got there, a very pretty and nice employee assisted me.  She asked me to sit and started babbling about all the tendencies for this season (which, by the way, here in Puerto Rico is ridiculous, because the sun is bright and shiny the whole year, and the humidity sucks the life out of us every day).

Nevertheless, she was very adamant that the "bare face look" is the trend right now.  Meaning an almost bare face, since it still requires makeup.  At that point I started laughing inside.  I thought, if you don’t even out the canvas the painting is going to look awful.  Meaning, if you don’t prepare your face, the whole makeup look is incomplete.  But I just answered:  “Leave that trend for those who have perfect and flawless skin.  I want to conceal certain spots and redness…”  Blah, blah, blah.  Afterwards, I took a good look at her and I noticed that she had her face all covered in bondo.  So what was she talking about?!  Really?!

Five days later I went to Sephora to buy something for the pores.  The guy that helped me was also very nice.  He asked me what I had on my face, to which I replied: “Moisturizer and powder”, which is as little as you can have.  (Please note that I was just out of the gym.  That’s how little I wear to exercise.  Nights are more complicated, but that’s a whole other subject).

He immediately suggested that I use foundation.  I was like, REALLY?!  (Yes, again. Really?!)

This is just a mere example of a consumer that likes to visit makeup stores frequently. I am that lucky, if you wish to say so, but not really.  (I'll go over that a future time).

So, with a little bit of inference, I think we can all conclude that what we know as a "trend" is only synonym of profit.  You, as a customer, should be responsible of what you buy.

Buy whatever feels right to you, listen to the “gurus”, experts, store employees, whatever it is, but ultimately make your own decision; because they are there to sell and yes, you are there to buy, but also to look the best that you can, and to enjoy the products you have purchased.

You are the one that imposes the trend of taking care of yourself and living life at its fullest.  Enjoy makeup as an enhancer of happiness!!!!!
